Help Stop the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline!

October 25, 2016

aa-4079-dakota_access-standing-rock-souix-from-nrdc-news-letter

I recently received an updated news letter from NRDC in regards to the disastrous  pipeline that is to run through the sacred Native American Indians Dakota land. Our soon to be ex-President has it within his power to stop this atrocity and make the last few days of his presidency have a real, meaningful and lasting legacy. But will he? He needs to hear from us loud and clear that this is what we the people want and expect of him, to represent us as he was elected to do. I am posting a copy of the news letter and a link to a form letter that one may personalize and e-mail with one simple click so that you too can be heard, just as I have done. Thank you for your time to read and act on this important issue.

“In Standing Rock, North Dakota, thousands of Native Americans and their allies have been camped out for months to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline — a dangerous fracked oil pipeline that, if built, threatens the sacred lands and drinking water of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

Last week, the movement had a setback when a federal court rejected the Standing Rock Sioux’s request for an injunction that would block construction of this fossil fuel disaster-in-the-making.

The ruling means that Big Oil is free to bulldoze ahead with the pipeline through the Standing Rock Sioux’s ancestral lands as planned, despite the fact that the Obama administration called a temporary halt to construction on parts of the pipeline last month.

President Obama has the power to stand up to the oil giants and stop this disastrous pipeline for good — but to make that happen, he needs to hear from as many of us as possible.

Tell President Obama to stand with the Standing Rock Sioux people and revoke the permits for the disastrous Dakota Access Pipeline.  {click here to go to letter one may e-mail to be heard.}

This pipeline is dangerous and risky. If completed, it would carry 450,000 gallons of oil a day across more than 1,100 miles — cutting through the heart of the Standing Rock Sioux’s cherished lands, jeopardizing countless sensitive natural areas and threatening our climate and the sole source of drinking water for the tribe.

That’s probably why the companies behind the pipeline took advantage of regulatory loopholes to bypass a transparent and proper public review process.

And it’s why tribal organizers refused to give in, even when met at demonstrations against the pipeline by security guards using pepper spray and guard dogs (several children and tribal elders reportedly suffered dog bites).

These giant companies have shown they’ll go to any lengths necessary to build the pipeline, no matter how vile. They’ve even pledged to spend upwards of $3.8 billion if that’s what it takes!

But for months, people have gathered at Sacred Stone Camp in North Dakota, and at vigils around America, to support the Standing Rock Sioux’s call to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. We’re witnessing the blossoming of a movement — individuals banding together to speak truth to power.

Millions of us fought long and hard to defeat the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Let’s do it again in North Dakota — add your voice to this rising chorus and demand justice.{or click here to go to letter.}

In solidarity,

Rhea

A Show Worth Watching.

December 3, 2015

extinction     Racing Extinction ”  a documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and others look at mankind’s role in a potential loss of at least half of the world’s species.

The show presented the beautiful sights and sounds of our environment.  Such wonders are always magical for me and leave me with feelings of awe, amazement and longing to immerse myself in this wonderment.

racing-extinction-1racing-extinction-visore_58239_big205709-27_11_2015_15_36_03_70720363video1WANT_RACING_EXTINCTION_DIERSOORTEN7-623x623     But it also showed the darker side of what is happening on our planet.  All of which left me feeling shocked, stunned, angry, disgusted, tearful, depressed and profoundly saddened.

15772documentario-racing-extinction-discoveryracing-extinction-national-wildlife-property-repositoryvcover22f-13-web      How can people still think that we are not responsible for the decline of our environment.  Mankind is destroying our planet.

In the documentary it is asked is anyone still listening?  Then let us listen to a variety of the sounds of our environment and wildlife.

extinct-hawaii-Oo-moho-nobilis-keulemans     I listened in awe to the recording of the Hawaii O’o bird’s song as the male sings for a few notes then awaits the responding song notes from the life long female mate, then he would sing out again and the cycle would repeat.  So simple, so elegant, so gone forever.  How profoundly sad then to next hear the last recording of the lone male Hawaii O’o bird call out for a mate that will never answer as she no longer exists.  So, with his death comes the extinction of his species and the silencing of his once elegant mating call that has now become only a mournful recorded memory.  What could be worse?  How about a completely silent ocean?

dead coral….. life comes from the ocean and with a dead silent ocean would follow a dead silent world.

Maybe we should listen while we still can and ask “Will I help heal and save or hurt and destroy the world?”

Can’t See My Patio for the Leaves….. Oh My!

November 16, 2015

fall-leaves-background-20807-21344-hd-wallpapers1

Well it seems like forever since my last post but I have been too sick to do much about it. Just haven’t felt up to sharing any of my critter tales or environmental updates {those updates lately only seem to get my blood pressure up!}. Oh, but Fall is in the air and I love Fall and Winter so much more than Summer {can’t tolerate the heat much any more}. So, the other morning I rolled over in bed and tried to stretch out my sore, stiff, aching muscles and joints. Pried my puffy eyes open and thought how much I hated mornings, but was looking forward to seeing the wonderful view out my glass patio doors located conveniently right next to my bed. All of the Oak and Ash Leaf Maple trees’ leaves were changing to their Fall colors and that view makes morning hours worth while. It had been raining non-stop for days but this day the weather man had promised bright sunshine all day long! Yes, blue sky and Fall leaves were to be the start of this new day, but wait…… what the heck? I saw beautiful Fall leaves….. check……but no blue sky…..as a matter of fact no sky at all! Now, just what was going on? Every inch of both glass doors were covered in leaves. I couldn’t see anything except leaves. I sat up on the side of my bed for a better look. Well, I’ll be darn those leaves are stuck to the doors with little dabs of pine sap and it looks like there was writing on them! So, I put on my reading glasses for a closer look and yes, there was writing on all of them. “We miss you!”, “Please come out to play!”, “It’s party time, so why aren’t you having us some?”, “It’s not the same without you.”, “I’m hungry feed me!”{I know who wrote that one…. Double Trouble the Super Squirrel}, “When is the next poker game?”, “Time to lite the fire and roast marshmallows and tell stories!”, “Come out and sing and dance with us soon!”, “Hanging around without you ain’t the same!” {I feel you Peanut}, “Did we do something wrong?” and so on with each and every leaf having a different message. Some nice and neat while other misspelled and hard to read. All of my critters had been very busy it seems. I wonder who’s house they raided to get the markers they used on the leaves. It doesn’t pay around my neighborhood to leave your windows open especially with all my squirrel, raccoon and opossum critter on the loose. They love going through your dresser drawers, closets, desk drawers and kitchen cabinets and heaven help you if you leave your credit cards laying around and they get accesses to your computer…. let’s just say strange things will start to show up in your mail or on your door step {if you get there before the offending critter does that is!}. Yes, they had been very busy.

I took off my reading glasses and slid the door open to take a look outside and there was the bright blue sky and plenty of colorful leaves still on the trees. Upon those tree limbs also sat many of my beautiful feathered friends and tons of my critters including Double Trouble the Super Squirrel and Peanut hanging by the tail and waving at me. I smiled and waved back. Peanut is still one of the cutest opossums I’ve ever seen with its sharp toothy grin. I rubbed my eyes and looked again to make sure but yes, Rocco the raccoon was under the bird bath and sleeping soundly snuggled up with one bright orange spiked high heel shoe. Oh crap, one of my neighbors was going to be pissed. I called out to all of them “OK, I got it. Friday Night Poker games are back on. We’ll have a party soon and I’ll have food out after I have my coffee. Now, who is going to clean the tree sap off my glass doors? Oh, save the leaves they’ll go in my critter scrapbook thank you!” It is nice to be missed…… even if it may only be for the food sometimes.

I guess I have some work to do, some parties to plan and Friday Night Poker games will be back. Heck, I might even let a stray cat join in on one of the poker games but that would mean keeping a close eye on it because we all know how they like to cheat at poker ….. and are very good at cheating too! I’m starting to soften up some towards cats since my two legged critter brought home TWO that he adopted but that is a whole other story! I must admit they do keep the squirrels from sneaking into the house at least until the squirrels learn that these two fat cats have a weakness for snacks, then things might change. Hopefully I’ll be posting those critter tales and other updates more often now.

I hope you can sit back and relax with a steaming hot cup of your favorite beverage and enjoy the change of the Fall foliage in all of Mother Nature’s natural wonders until our paths cross again………. Lila

Important Update on Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline

April 9, 2015

Photo from NRDC web site

We need to stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline now. If  we don’t “Big Oil’s Plan Will Destroy Songbird Habitat, Fuel Global Warming and Threaten Our Drinking Water.” says NRDC . They have put together a short video and an online petition that is informative and will only take a couple of minutes to watch, complete and click your way towards doing the right thing for our future and environment.

Kyra Sedgwick   One glitch in the tar sands pipeline would destroy our clean water sources — possibly forever.

-Kyra Sedgwick, Actress and NRDC Member –
Rhea SuhRhea Suh President, NRDC states “
I’ve seen a lot of ugly schemes from Big Oil, but nothing like this. It’s an industrial onslaught of staggering proportions.
At every turn, the Tar Sands Invasion would put Americans in harm’s way, threaten our priceless natural heritage and exact an especially high toll on low-income communities living near railway corridors, oil refineries and toxic petroleum waste sites.
Unless we stop it, this influx of tar sands oil would represent a grievous setback in our efforts to secure a stable climate future. Just extracting this dirty fuel from the ground spews three times more climate-destroying carbon pollution into the atmosphere than conventional oil. President Obama has the authority to stop this. But the fact is, he may not act without a massive show of resistance from people like you and me.”

Ms. Sedgwick and Ms. Rhea Suh are only two of many whom understand the importance of protecting our environment, still we need all the support we can get. Will you help?

Watch our hard-hitting video exposing Big Oil’s shocking plan. Then, sign the petition urging President Obama to repel the coming tar sands assault.

Remember no matter where you live, you could be in the danger zone as this issue affects all of us in the United State.

Thank you for your time regarding this important issue from me and all of my critters here in our little urban wildlife habitat. May the sun shine on your shoulders while a gentle breeze lifts your spirit, happy in the knowledge that you are making a beneficial impact on our world until our paths cross again …. Lila

Good News from the People of NRDC

April 6, 2015

I just wanted to share some good news for a change! I can’t say it better so I am re-blogging this from one of my e-mailings from NRDC {Natural Resources Defense Council}.

“TOP STORY
Turning the Tide
Whales got a big win in federal court this week, thanks to an NRDC lawsuit. A judge ruled that the government hasn’t done enough to protect marine mammals from harmful sonar noise caused by U.S. Navy training exercises in the Pacific Ocean.

Did You Know?

A Silent Victory

A federal judge stands up to the noisy navy for the sake of marine mammals.

Last summer, the United States Navy invited 22 countries to participate in exercises across a wide swath of the Pacific Ocean. For whales and dolphins, though, the gathering probably felt more like war than war game. Training exercises such as the biannual RIMPAC event—which includes naval ships, submarines, aircraft, and all the noise pollution that comes with them—are dangerous to cetaceans. In short, noise can be a deadly weapon.

The tide may finally be turning in the whales’ favor, though. A federal court ruled yesterday that the government has fallen short of its legal obligation to protect marine mammals from naval exercises in the Pacific.

Active sonar—bouncing sound waves off physical objects to produce an underwater map—is a major threat to marine mammals. Whales, for example, are exquisitely attuned to sound. Their ear bones are about the size of a human head, and those ears provide the animal with most of its sensory information in the dark underwater environment. Whales rely on their sensitive hearing to find food, communicate with peers, and mate. Marine biologists have a saying that sums this up succinctly: A deaf whale is a dead whale.

Deploying active sonar near a whale that’s trying to hunt is a bit like shining a spotlight in the eyes of a human in the grocery store. So when sonar-equipped ships enter an area, whales stop feeding. They also stray from migration paths and abandon their traditional habitats. If a whale is close to the ship when sailors switch on their sonar system, the consequences can be even more dramatic. The blast of sound can damage the whales’ lungs and digestive system and cause temporary or permanent hearing loss.

Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the National Marine Fisheries Service must review any activities that could pose a threat to, well, marine mammals. Its review isn’t always satisfactory, though. In December 2013, the NMFS approved the navy’s five-year plan for sonar and ordinance use in the Pacific Ocean—even though the military’s own data showed that the activities would inflict harm on marine mammals 9.6 million times. The plan represented a 1,100 percent increase in incidents of harm to whales and dolphins.

The following month, NRDC and a coalition of environmental groups sued the NMFS for failing to fulfill its obligations. (Disclosure.) The organizations demanded that the government develop better safeguards to protect marine mammals from the navy’s sonar and explosives, such as declaring certain areas off-limits when whales are feeding or mating. In response, the navy pointed out that it had set aside a plot of sea—3.1 miles in length—near the Hawaiian coast to protect humpback whales and contended that any additional restrictions would hamper its operational ability. That argument, though, seems a teeny bit unreasonable, considering it claims its exercises need 2.7 million square nautical miles, an area larger than the continental United States.

Federal Judge Susan Oki Mollway rejected the arguments made by the navy and the NMFS—and the language she used in her opinion verged on mockery in some places. When the NMFS said it would have come to the same conclusion even if it had used superior data, she dismissed this as an “it makes no difference” argument and accused the agency of offering “after-the-fact explanations.”

Judge Mollway even waxed nautical in describing her search for a rational justification for the NMFS’ decision: “This court feels like the sailor in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’, who, trapped for days on a ship becalmed in the middle of the ocean, laments, ‘Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.’ “

Although the whales won this round, Judge Mollway’s ruling is only on the merits, not on the remedies. That’s a fancy legal way of saying that the judge hasn’t yet decided on what the NMFS must do to bring itself into compliance with the law. That decision is likely months away. Until then, whales can breathe a sigh of relief, presumably out of their blowholes.”

I have been a member of NRDC for many years. They do very good work and are hard-working for our environment. They need as much support as they can get, not only money but volunteers to help spread the word on environmental issues. You can click on the link to NRDC on my blog roll just to the right of this post. Give it a try. It’s easy and informative too! Enjoy the beauty of nature all around you everyday until our paths cross again….. Lila

BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico…. BP doing it again….. will it ever end?

April 25, 2014

Dead_Dolphin2_280x170NWF     Just got in another update from the National Wildlife Federation and want to share it with all of my readers.  BP’s oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico four years ago is still killing our wildlife.  But if you listen to BP, they will have one and all believe life in the Gulf of Mexico is better than ever thanks to all of their hard work and commitment to the people, wildlife and environment after the unfortunate accident at the  Deepwater Horizon site.   Anyone, who has read {or wants to read} my past posts on this topic {on this blog} can clearly see my disdain for all involved in those criminal and negligent acts.  Indeed those involved were found guilty by US Federal Laws and are to be held accountable.  But they are trying to still get away with murder and it just makes me sick!  I will now post here the update I was sent.  It may still end up with a link to donate to NWF funds to help fight back against these MEGA BUCK corporations but I am not asking you to donate {you can if you want to, as it goes to NWF not me or my blog in any way, shape or form} only to read, be informed and pass the word and outrage on…… even to your elected officials or these companies involved!

                                                                  National Wildlife Federation Action Fund

Since we broke the news last week about BP’s attacks to the National Wildlife Federation, the response from supporters like you has been overwhelming.

The generous outpouring of support is helping continue critical efforts to speak up for wildlife harmed by the oil spill in the Gulf. Together, we are fighting back against BP’s misinformation campaign—and rallying wildlife advocates to ensure that BP is held fully accountable for the harm they’ve caused.

But, BP is upping its efforts to deny even the most basic science.

Sincerely,

Andy

Since the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, more than 900 dead dolphins have been found in the oil spill area.

But, BP has been spreading misinformation from the first days of the spill—from trying to keep reporters away from oiled dead dolphins to trying to hide the massive amount of oil gushing from the Deepwater Horizon site. Now the oil giant’s campaign of misinformation is in high gear.

Incredibly, last week BP is denying the science of even the most basic oil impacts on wildlife and attacking the National Wildlife Federation for taking reporters into the disaster zone!

Studies have shown that dolphins in a heavily-oiled section of the Louisiana coast have lung damage immune system problems, and their teeth are falling out. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration have determined there is strong evidence that BP’s oil is what is making these dolphins so sick.

But BP is now telling reporters there’s no real evidence that dolphins were affected by the oil, and instead has chosen to downplay the science and attack the messengers.

Now, just days after the National Wildlife Federation published a report looking at how fourteen species of wildlife are still suffering four years into the oil disaster, BP is dramatically escalating its misinformation campaign.

It is up to committed, caring wildlife advocates like you to help fight back for dolphins—and stop BP from hiding the horrible harm they’ve caused.

With your help, we can stand up for dolphins, and ensure that BP pays every penny needed to restore sensitive wildlife habitat in the waters, shorelines, bays and estuaries of the Gulf from all the damage it caused.

Together, we can rally hundreds of thousands of wildlife advocates across the country who care about Gulf wildlife and pressure the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to make sure wildlife habitat in the Gulf of Mexico is fully restored.

Our work is not over until BP is held fully accountable for its negligence, and we have done everything that can be done to maximize the amount of BP penalties spent on Gulf research and restoration.

Thanks for all you do to protect wildlife.

Entry for April 14, 2009 The Rain Bow After The Storm.

April 11, 2014

Just wanted to give a nice blast from the past. This was a post of mine a few Masters ago. Has been one of my favorites and thought it was worth a second read. So enjoy until our paths cross again….. Lila

Lila's Room With "Views"

It has been a few days since our paths have crossed. We’ve not been gone just very, very busy….. very busy indeed! To start with our fair city was host to critters (mostly of the two legged kind) from all over the world. They had come from near and far to see The Master’s National Golf Tournament. My critters have been known to sneak in and blend in to the back ground and watch everything! If you were there or watching on TV you might have even heard some of my sneaky little critters as they kept a birds eye view on things and got carried away and would start singing…..I heard them…. I couldn’t get through those gates either, like so many others….. but I heard some of my Northern Cardinals and Carolina Wrens…… couldn’t mistake them…lol… heard them loud and clear! Yep just about everyone of my outside…

Shouldn’t the wild life in our National Parks be safe from hunters?

April 4, 2014

REUTERS_Lucy Nicholson       I happened to notice that the Yellowstone Bison was trending and thought it was some of the same old thing about the hazing and slaughter of bison when they unknowingly leave the boundaries of the park.  I was wrong.  What is trending is that the  Nez Perce Native Indian tribe is wanting to have the right to hunt within the National Park.  Really?  I am not going to get into the Native Indian’s right to reclaim lost land and such, as what I’ve read so far they are not asking for the land…. just the right to go and hunt where NO ONE ELSE has a right to hunt.  So, why should they?  I will not get “all worked up” {as some of my friends call it when I start writing letter, e-mails, phone calls…} about it right now as it seems to be in the “just talking about it for now”.  Some of the things written about the bison’s health is….. lets say not completely correct and some I would have to throw down a “bull shit” flag if I was going to get “all worked up” about it right now….. but I’m not.  For now I will keep an eye on the issue so I will know if or when I need to get “all worked up”.

There is an ongoing issue with these same bison.  One, I have worked on with the National Wildlife Federation through their Leader’s Club for which I am a long time member.   That is the hazing and slaughter of these majestic animals just because the can’t read signs or know when they are crossing boundaries out of their protected park.  Over the years we have worked on “Adopting” and “Retiring” grazing lots around these borders so that ranchers can lease other and better grazing lots further away and prevent contact between their livestock and the bison.  Now there is another way to help.  Here is the link from one of my updates: Help more people speak up for Yellowstone bison—please share this alert with your friends.  While you are there go to their home page and look around.  NWF has a great website with fun information too .  They are also on my blog roll with a direct link to their home page.

I think I’ve said my piece for the day.  Now I think I’ll just get some rest and later visit with some of my wild critters that visit me on my patio….. come join me anytime there is always an empty rockin’ chair or go and enjoy some critter of your own until our paths cross again…….. Lila

They Call Them The Breeze As They Must Be Moving On….

April 1, 2014

waxwing-flock-993

Woke up this fine morning to what sounded like a wild party going on next to my bed. Sat up and looked out my glass patio doors and there was a party in full swing on my patio! Rubbed my eyes and put on my glasses and looked again. Yes, there certainly was some partying going on. Someone……hmmm maybe DT Jr. {Double Trouble the Super Squirrel’s son} must have snuck into my home and borrowed {I use the term “borrowed” loosely when used in regard to DT and any of his kin} my iPod and speakers. I say this because Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “They Call Me the Breeze” is rocking my glass patio doors. I must say that what I saw did put a smile on my face, once I got past my impolite awakening. My feathered friends where rocking out. The Dark-eyed Juncos were shaking their tail feathers, while the Yellow -rumped {Myrtle} Warblers were doing the “Myrtle Beach Shag” all over the patio. The Mourning Doves weren’t mourning this morning, as a matter of a fact, they had their under bellies hiked up and were doing a line dance across the patio, just missing the tail shaking Dark-eyed Juncos. Some of the Brown-headed Nuthatch were hanging upside down working their way outwards on a tree limb pecking at bugs to the music’s beat, while the White-throated Sparrows, Carolina Chickadees and Carolina Wrens were a hoppin’ and a boppin’ to the tune. The Chipping Sparrows and the House Sparrows had paired up to shake their tail feathers too! The American “Red-breasted” Robins were high-stepping it while pulling worms from the compost pile and the Eastern Towhees were doing a “double back scratch” along side a Hermit Thrush {who was making a rare appearance} was raising and lowering its tail feathers to the rhythmic beat of Skynyrd’s music. All the while the squirrels were keeping time from their spot on the fence and some Cedar Waxwings were keepin’ an eye on everyone while perched way up high.

Spring must be here, even though it still feels more like winter every other day. My feathered friends seem to know better than I do and this is their reason for one last party, before the winter friends must leave northward bound, as mating fever sets in. My local feathered friends have started claiming the best nesting spots and soon the rush will be on to set up house keeping and before I know it there will be fledglings and juveniles all over my patio! Yes, Spring must be here. I think I’ll make a cup of coffee and enjoy my soon to be departing feathered friends while I still can. It won’t be long now and I will have a new crew of feathered friends migrate to my patio. Just an other reason to have more patio parties!

So, check out your own back yard or patio and have a party or two with some of your feathered friends and let them put a smile on your face and joy in your heart until our paths cross again……… Lila
